CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team will play the University of Alberta Golden Bears in a two game, home and away matchup. The Dinos will host the Golden Bears on Thursday for Pack the Jack night at the Jack Simpson Gym at 8 p.m. They will then head to Edmonton to play the Golden Bears at 7 p.m. at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
This will be the first meeting between the two since the 2017-18 Canada West Championship game, in which the Dinos won 84-77. This time, the Dinos and Golden Bears are ranked No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the U SPORTS Top 10.
TOUGH RIVALRY
The Dinos and Golden Bears were both ranked top three in the preseason coach's poll with the Dinos ranking No. 1 and the Golden Bears ranked No. 3. Last season, the Golden Bears won both of the regular season matchups against the Dinos. Calgary got revenge defeating the University of Alberta in the Canada West championship.
2-0
Both the Dinos and Golden Bears have begun the season 2-0 and this weekend one team could potentially end the week still undefeated. Two highly ranked teams will battle for top spot in an important match up between long time rivals. Last season the Golden bears finished the regular season 19-1, and the Dinos finished 16-4.
QUOTABLE
Head coach
Dan Vanhooren said he thinks the University of Alberta Golden Bears will be a good challenge.
"Looking at their roster, they got some size and Brody Clarke is their key player. They have some good additions on the perimeter, so we expect them to be a very strong challenge. They've been competitive for years so I expect nothing less of the match up," said Vanhooren.
