KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The University of Calgary Dinos forced 16 first-half turnovers and held the home side to just 60 points on the night as they swept the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack with a 76-60 win Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre.
The Dinos outscored TRU 36-30 in the second half after holding a 40-30 lead at the half. They were led on offense by
Thomas Cooper with 19 points.
David Kapinga added 17 with
Jhony Verrone potting 11.
TRU's main offensive threat was Volodymyr Iegorov, who had 16 points. Trent Monkman added 15 points while Derek Rhodes added 10.
"Tonight I liked our defensive energy," said Dinos head coach
Dan Vanhooren. "We had a number of shot clock violations on them. We played with a lot more team concept involved. We were doing the right things. Last night, we tended to chase guys out and give up back cuts. We were much more disciplined today.
"We need to shoot the ball a whole lot better than we did this weekend. We came in here shooting pretty well from the three. We left here with a pretty dismal percentage. We have to get much better from there if we are going to compete with some of the top teams in the country."
The Dinos (14-4) are virtually guaranteed of a first-round playoff berth, and will look to solidify that next weekend as they wrap up the regular season by hosting the MacEwan Griffins in the Jack Simpson Gym. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. Friday night and 7 p.m. Saturday - and prior to Saturday's contest, the Dinos will honour their graduating seniors.
