KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The University of Calgary Dinos fended off a wild comeback by the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Saturday night, emerging with a 63-60 win despite scoring just 25 and giving up 37 in the second half.
Calgary improves to 10-8 on the season, with two games left to play. The Dinos will host the MacEwan Griffins next Friday and Saturday night to wrap up the regular season before the 2016-17 Canada West playoffs begin.
The Dinos jumped out to a 38-23 lead at the half and looked to be in control of the contest, but the home side turned it up in the second half and had a chance to win it in the dying seconds, but Calgary was able to fend it off and take the weekend sweep.
"We did enough in the first half to see this game through," said Dinos head coach
Damian Jennings. "It was a great comeback by TRU. Great respect on the way they played. They shot the ball with confidence and capitalized on our mistakes. I'm disappointed with our play in the second half.
"It is a bit of a patience job. I think the thing we will be most disappointed about this game is how some of our older players performed. They made some errors today. But you have to be in those games to see the mistakes. To be honest we haven't been in that position much this year."
Freshman guard
Bobbi Jo Colburn led all players with 16 points on the night, while
Anmol Mattu added 13 and
Brianna Ghali poured in a dozen. Ghali added a team-high nine rebounds, with Colburn hauling down seven.
Michelle Bos paced the WolfPack with 15 points.
Calgary returns to the Jack Simpson Gym Feb. 10-11 to play host to the MacEwan Griffins. Tip-off goes at 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday, live on CanadaWest.tv.
