WINNIPEG – A four-goal third period by the University of Calgary Dinos put them past the Manitoba Bisons in a 4-0 decision in men's hockey competition at the Wayne Fleming Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Strong goaltending and assertive third period play is what separated these two teams. Dinos goaltender Jordan Papirny stopped everything he saw, while the Calgary offence finally came to life in the third period after peppering the Manitoba net all game.
With the road win, Calgary vaults back into third place in the Canada West standings with a 7-4-2-1 record, while Manitoba falls back to fourth spot with a 7-5-2-0 mark.
After a scoreless but aggressive first two periods, filled with penalties against both teams, Calgary forward
Chris Collins sniped a shot past the Bisons' goaltender in the opening minute of the third period.
After the Dinos opened scoring in the third, they continued to dominate the game, with a total of 24 shots on the Bisons net by the end of play.
With 11 minutes left to go in the third, Dinos' defenceman
Drydn Dow slid a shot past Byron Spriggs, assisted by teammates Mitch Cook and Robbie Fisher, increasing the Dinos lead to 2-0.
Three minutes later the visitors struck again with R. Fisher scoring with an assist from Cook.
The Bisons had a chance to score on a power play late in the third, but were unable to produce any goals.
After pulling Spriggs from the net in the last minutes of play, Tim Vanstone was able to take advantage and score an empty netter, assisted by teammate Jared Hauff.
The Bisons play next in British Columbia, against the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday December 1. Calgary heads to Lethbridge next Friday to play the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
