Dinos enter home opener with high aspirations

CALGARY – The No. 2 University of Calgary women's volleyball team will host their first home games of the conference schedule this coming weekend. On Friday, the Dinos will face the University of Manitoba Bisons at 6 p.m., followed by an earlier 4 p.m. start time on Saturday night against those same Bisons. 

The Dinos (2-0) steam rolled through the season opener last weekend with a 3-1 and 3-0 victory over the University of Regina Cougars. On Friday, Calgary beat the Cougars 25-17, 25-14, and 25-23 in sets one, two and four, but fell in set three, 22-25. With the match, Calgary registered a .257 overall hitting percentage, noting 47 kills and 13 aces. Kate Pexman played an amazing match, putting down 15 kills with four aces. Brianna Solberg added 13 kills and a block, while Jaylynn Moffatt noted five kills and six blocks. 

On Saturday afternoon, Pexman followed up with another 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage; she also added an ace and six digs, accumulating a total of 13.5 points. In the three-setter, Beth Vinnell also gathered 13.5 points, notching 10 kills and an ace. Amber Adolf and Laura McManes contributed seven and five kills, respectively, while Moffatt added five kills and 9.5 points. 

For the season, Calgary's hitting percentage is currently at .298, with 12.43 assists per set and 3.57 blocks per set. With the double win over Regina, the Dinos have a win streak of two, and will be hoping to extend it with a couple of wins over the Bisons. 

The University of Manitoba heads into the weekend with a 1-1 record, following games against the Brandon University Bobcats. Kearley Abbott and Tori Studler lead the Bisons with 3.25 kills per set. Laura Findlay also shined with a total of 19 kills, averaging 2.38 per set.
