Dinos score late; fall in OT to Bears

NOTE: The original 3-2 (OT) score of this game was overturned after the University of Calgary self-disclosed the use of an ineligible player. The official final score of this game is now 1-0 for the University of Alberta. All player statistics, save those of the ineligible player, remain intact.

EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos scored with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation, but the University of Alberta Golden Bears sent fans home happy, earning a 3-2 win in overtime on Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Calgary got goals from Cain Franson and Chris Collins, while Jordan Papirny turned in a stellar performance in the net, making 33 saves in the loss. Dylan Bredo scored his third goal of the season in overtime, with Brandon Magee and Jason Fram scoring for Alberta in regulation. Rookie Zach Sawchenko was solid on Saturday, making 25 saves for his third win of the season.

Calgary is dealt their second overtime loss of the season, falling to 3-1-2.  The win was Alberta's sixth this season, as they remain atop the conference standings with a 6-0-0 record.

Coming off an offensive outburst the previous night, the Golden Bears picked up right were they left off, firing 14 shots on goal - including numerous scoring chances - in the first, and scoring once. Fram opened the scoring 16 minutes in, finishing off a nice passing play from Jamie Crooks. Papirny was able to come up with a handful of fantastic saves in the first, keeping the Bears at one goal.

The Bears doubled their lead at the end of the second period, as Magee ripped in his second of the season. Taking the drop pass from Tyson Baillie, Magee took a slap shot from the half-wall, blowing his clapper clean over Papirny's shoulder into the top left corner.

Calgary thought they had their first of the night in the second, but their scramble goal in the Alberta crease was called off due to a hand pass.

The Dinos started playing with some urgency in the third period, controlling the puck for long stretches in the Alberta zone. That possession finally paid off with four minutes left, as Franson cut the Alberta lead to one. Bears captain Riley Kieser was called for hooking with 24 seconds left, and coupled with the empty Calgary net, gave Calgary a six-on-four advantage needing the tying goal in the final seconds. Collins was able to even the game, unbelievably tipping in the Cain Franson point shot with 1.5 seconds left in regulation.

It didn't take much overtime for the game to be decided, however, as Bredo raced in on a three-on-one advantage, ripping in a short-side shot over Papirny.

The Dinos are at home next weekend as they welcome the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Golden Bears will now head on the road for their first full series away from Clare Drake Arena, as they visit the Regina Cougars.
