CALGARY – The Dinos start the second half of their season with two strong wins as they subdued the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack tonight in the Jack Simpson Gym. Sweeping the WolfPack 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 30-28), the Dinos elevate their record to 5-7 while the WolfPack drop to 1-11.
The first set was a close competition as the Dinos played a little bit of a catch-up game until eventually beating the WolfPack. The second set was characterized by domination by the Dinos as the WolfPack struggled to match their rivals on the scoreboard. The third set was an intense neck and neck competition with the WolfPack striving to turn the game around. Attack errors in favour of the Dinos late in the set, however, would give Calgary the doubleheader sweep.
Outside hitters Curtis Stockton and Alex Bader combined for 29 kills to lead the Dinos' offence. Alex Cook proved to set up his teammates for success with 33 assists on the board. Overall, the Dinos had 42 kills, 39 assists, 29 digs, and 5 blocks to end the night.
Alex Bader reflected on the success they had in the first two games of the second half of their season. He said "We really talked about just coming out strong in the first set and we've done that both nights. That's been huge for us to just get going right off the bat. It's just helped us sustain [ourselves] throughout all three sets."
The goal for the rest of the season is clear. He said "We definitely want to slide into playoffs. We had a rough go at the start of the season…we'd like to make that push for a playoff spot."
Next, the Dinos travel to Edmonton, Alta. to face the MacEwan University Griffins on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14.
