Russo scores hat-trick to defeat Timberwolves

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team celebrated the school's 50th anniversary with a 4-0 victory over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves, Saturday afternoon at the West Varsity Pitch.

Leading scorer Dominic Russo got the Dinos off and running early, scoring on a second effort opportunity in the 3rd minute of play. Rookie forward Bori Falaye continued to show his chemistry with Russo, as he fed him the ball Russo scored his eighth of the season, sneaking it by Timberwolves goalie Mitch MacFarlane.

Just 11 minutes later, Falaye added a goal of his own, his fourth of the campaign, as he finessed the ball over the goal keeper, after beating Timberwolves defender, Gordon Hall, wide therein doubling the Dinos lead. "He brings that unique flare" praised midfielder Robin Whittaker. "Not many people have what he has, it's a joy to watch and he's a joy to play with."

The Dinos on defense stepped up, closing off any chances against, as the Timberwolves struggled to generate any noteworthy opportunities. Only one shot was attempted for UNBC by halftime, and it did not reach the net.

The second half was highlighted by the Dinos relentless offensive pressure, as numerous openings were given to the Dinos, including a right side shot off the post from forward, Michael McKinnon. The Timberwolves were unable to generate anything on the offensive side of the pitch, as they finished the match with zero shots on target.

In late stages of the game, Russo buried his ninth and tenth goals of the season, drawing assists from Falaye and Dominick Zator respectively, as he completed the hat-trick on the final touch of the game. "Huge for the team to get those goals" added Whittaker. "The more chances we create, the more goals are going to come, it's all positive to see."

UNBC will finish their Alberta road swing as they battle the Mount Royal Cougars tomorrow at 12:30. The Dinos will continue their four game home stand as they face off against the visiting Victoria Vikes at 2:15 at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
