CALGARY - The Dinos suffered a loss in the second game of their doubleheader against the Regina Cougars. Losing the contest 83-71, the Dinos' record fell to 14-5 while the Cougars' rose to 16-2. In their second seniors' night, Ashley Hirons, Claire Colborne, and Kristie Sheils were celebrated by head coach Damian Jennings.
From the jumpoff, the vibe in the gymnasium was significantly different from last night's electrifying Pack the Jack. The Cougars quickly subdued the Dinos early to set a completely different pace from the previous contest. With impressive ball movement and higher efficiency on the hardwood, the Cougars gained the edge. Christina Kot led the offensive charge early and Katie Polischuk later joined the attack to obliterate the Dinos' defence.
The Dinos beat the Cougars in multiple categories including bench scoring (29-18), steals (11-2), points off turnovers (21-8), and points in the paint (48-30). Dinos Claire Colborne, Brianna Ghali, Kelsey Lund, and Erin McIntosh shared the primary scoring and defensive duties during the night. However, the Cougars were simply far more offensively efficient in their play. Led especially by Polischuk, the Cougars' three point shooting proved especially deadly as they made 8 out of their 19 attempts.
"We shot so poorly...didn't make our threes, didn't take enough threes in the beginning, missed layups, and we fouled. That's just criminal" said head coach Damian Jennings in his takeaways from the game. "They were scoring more easily than we had to score even though we had good looks and we just missed them. That was frustrating tonight"
Even while this game was disappointment, Jennings and his squad are looking forward to their final game of the season against the first placed Alberta Pandas in Edmonton on Saturday, February 20. With matchups locked, the Dinos will look to take their season to the next level in the playoffs.
