Four third goals seals Huskies win over Dinos

SASKATOON – Four third period goals led the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 5-3 win over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos Friday night in Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.

After three goals between the teams in the first period, Saskatchewan's offence came to life in the third with three goals in the first six minutes of the period. The Huskies also added an insurance goal late in the frame.

With the win, the No. 9 ranked Huskies improve to 8-3-0. Calgary drops to 1-7-3.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard first with a quick play off a faceoff in the Huskies' zone. Sasha Vavina carried the puck in front of the net and slipped it between rookie Jasey Rae Book and the right post just 38 seconds into the game.

Kaitlin Willoughby evened the score at 3:56 beating Calgary netminder Kelsey Roberts on a breakaway.

Before the period was done, Chelsea Court looked to centre the puck in front of the Huskies goal. The pass had the right angle and trickled into the open side of the net at 16:16.

The first of the Huskies' three goals to open the final frame was scored at 2:46.  A turnover in the Huskies zone, allowed Saskatchewan to break out. A quick pass behind the net landed on Bailee Bourassa's stick for the goal. Leah Bohlken scored the Huskies go-ahead goal at 4:12 on pinching in from the point on a scramble in front of the net on a power play. Captain Lauren Zary scored the third goal shorthanded on a rebound at 6:40.

The Dinos made the bid for a comeback with a Delaney Frey float shot that slid by Book top shelf glove side at 16:14, but Kori Herner added the Saskatchewan insurance goal at 19:25.

Book finished the night making 16 saves for the Huskies, while Roberts stopped 19 for the Dinos at the other end of the ice.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night in Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
