CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos roared onto the hardwood energized and determined to tie up the doubleheader against the Winnipeg Wesmen following Saturday's loss and went on to defeat the Wesmen in an authoritative 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-15, 25-19) Sunday in the Jack Simpson Gym.
The first set was characterized by a neck and neck competition as both teams vied to match each other's tempo. The Dinos fought back and would edge out the competition with key kills to win 27-25 and they would continue the momentum for the rest of the game. The second and third sets saw the Dinos play exceptionally with exuberant confidence as the Wesmen struggled to keep up.
The key standouts for the Dinos tonight were
Alex Bader and
Curtis Stockton who combined for 23 kills.
Alex Cook proved to set up his teammates for success with 26 assists on the board. Overall, the Dinos had 34 kills, 31 assists, 23 digs, and 14 blocks to end the night.
Head coach
Rod Durrant was pleased with his team's performance and saw a couple of keys to his team's success.
"We did a really good job in our first ball contact, our setter did a very good job getting everybody involved, and we had some guys really step up and play well today," he said.
Next, the Dinos will travel to Brandon, Man. to face the Bobcats and try to improve their record on Friday, Nov. 19, 2016 and Saturday, Nov. 20.
