Dinos rout 'Horns in three-game win streak

| By:
CALGARY - In their only home game of the season, the University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 64-10 on Field 7.

The Dinos didn't let up all game, with nine different players scoring tries - third-year Shannon Chisholm was the only Dino to score two in the match. Wing Elysa Sandron was one of the stars of the show on the pitch today - she scored a try and seven converts for a total of 19 points alone!

"A big performance came from Shannon Chisholm, she really stepped up," said Dinos head coach Simon Chi. "She is maturing into her role as scrumhalf and she's starting to learn how to really run the field from her position. Obviously DaLeaka Menin and Emily Tuttosi had great games and they always do. In this type of game it's hard to identify people because it really was a team effort."

Kasselle Menin was the first Dino to get on the board after working in the far corner to score. Sandron scored her first of many converts from a tough angle with the ball bouncing off the crossbar and in. What followed just five minutes later was a try from Kaleigh Dupuis after a great set up by Temitope Ogunjimi who ran a large distance of the field to get the Dinos in scoring position - Sandron made the convert. Trading tries later on - Kaleigh Dupuis with Calgary's, and Fisayo Latilo with Lethbridge's - the Dinos were up 19-5 halfway through the first half. Putting on the pressure, the Dinos proceeded to score three more tries and three more converts before the half was over. Ogunjimi scored her fourth try of the season, while Chisholm scored her second of the day and Emily Tuttosi punched one in before the whistle blew.

In the second half, Lethbridge's offense stepped up and consistently put pressure on the Dinos' defense. It wasn't until 20 minutes in that the Dinos scored again. Fourth-year DaLeaka Menin found a gap and made a huge run to score for the Dinos. Sandron converted for her sixth of the game to give them the 47-5 lead. Kelcey Leavitt also found a gap in the Pronghorn's defense later on to score a try of her own - deeking through the final defenders to the end zone. With ten minutes left, Sandron scored a try, but missed the convert to widen the gap to 54 points. Nearing the end of the game, it was Frederique Tremblay that scored for the visitng Pronghorns and Samantha May scoring for the Dinos in the final moments. The final score was in favour of the Dinos, 64-10.

Overall, Chi was pleased with the effort, but knows there's more work to do in the next couple of weeks.

"It's an improvement from the B.C. trip and I think we were hitting more of our performance targets for this game. Still, we can be more accurate in our execution in certain parts of the field, but again, it's an improvement. We're building for the Canada West Championship later this month. It's a work in progress."

"We have two weeks off, but we have identified how we want to play, our style and our tactics," said Chi about their final regular season game against Alberta. "We'll be focused on executing in certain parts of the field and how we can stick to our game plan. we're going to break the film down and assess how we get through the next game and build on that."

The Dinos head to Edmonton on Oct. 15 hoping to record their season undefeated regular season in a row. The following weekend they'll head the opposite direction to Lethbridge where they will compete at the Canada West Championship.
