CALGARY - The University of Calgary women's soccer team put together a dominating victory on Saturday afternoon in front of the home crowd, downing the visiting MacEwan Griffins by the score of 3-1.
"It was a battle," said head coach
Troye Flannery. "MacEwan showed up ready to compete, good program, they're on the prowl for the Prairie Division title. Their intentions were obviously to come here and win. We had to match their intensity, we scored a few goals, but I think we had chances to score a few others. MacEwan was better in the second half, but didn't generate too much. I think that's a deserved few points for the team."
The Dinos grabbed their first goal of the match in the 2
nd minute as
Jordan Smith took a feed from
Kelsie MacDonald and worked her magic on the opponents half, maneuvering the ball past the keeper and slipping it into the net, for her 10
th goal of the season.
In the 18
th minute,
Maddie Lee took the ball off her opponents and sent a perfect outlet pass to teammate
Natalie Arnett. Arnett didn't waste the great opportunity as she beat the Griffins goalkeeper with a blast of a shot to the corner.
The Dinos picked up their third goal on a perfectly executed penalty kick;
Mollee Ramsay beat the goalkeeper to the left corner of the net in the 47
th minute of action. It was Ramsay's fifth goal for the 2016 season.
After some back-and-forth play between the teams following the goal by Ramsay, MacEwan was able to make it 3-1. Midfield Suekiana Choucair got a pass from teammate Tehya Davey and fired a hard low shot that found the back of the net.
Troye Flannery commented, "We took our foot off the gas a little bit; I've talked a lot about people coming into games with opportunities, game changers and unfortunately some that came into the game didn't change the game for the positive. Grant MacEwan is a team that'll keep working; they will keep fighting and they did just that."
For the game, Dinos held the 21-12 advantage in shots, with 12 shots on goal compared to six managed by the Griffins. Calgary also held the 4-3 advantage in corner kicks in the victory.
The Dinos will return to action on Sunday October 15, as they face-off against city-rivals Mount Royal University in the Crowchild Classic at West Varsity Pitch at 12 PM. The MacEwan Griffins will remain on the road to face the University of Lethbridge Promghorns at 12PM on on Sunday October 15, 2016.
