CALGARY - The University of Calgary men's soccer team stormed out to a 7-1 win against the MacEwan University Griffins on Saturday afternoon at West Varsity Pitch.
From the first minutes of the game, the Dinos showcased an impressive array of attacks.
Bori Falaye scored the first goal of the game, his fifth of the season in the 13
th minute, off a pass from
Dominic Russo.
The Griffins turned up the pressure in the 25
th minute, when MacEwans University Jacob Schepian sent a notable kick from a distance, defeating Dinos goalkeeper Brett Hunter.
Fans didn't have to wait long for an response from the home team; the Dinos notched the second goal of the match in the 30
th minute as
Bori Falaye blasted a low kick towards the middle-right corner right after the Griffins keeper went low to block a penalty. Team captain
Dominick Zator assisted the goal.
In the 35
th minute Russo had possession and fed
Jorge Leon Gomez who buried his fourth season goal into the corner of the net. Moments later, in the 42
nd minute, Gomez,netted his second of the match as he took a feed from Zator and beat the keeper.

Dominic Russo broke through with his first goal of the match in the 49
th minute, when he took advantage of a great opportunity given by
Mark Bohdan. He later overpowered the Griffins goalkeeper for the second time when he blasted a beauty from just outside the box in the 53
rd minute.
Rookie
Bryce Connors showcased his worth as well, scoring his first goal of the season in the final seconds of the 72
nd minute. Connors smartly took advantage of a near empty net, shooting a rocket neatly into the top middle of the goal.
Head coach
Brendan O'Connell was clearly pleased with the outcome, stating, "We had the right attitude, and didn't want to take any chances really. The game gave me a chance to introduce some of the players, give them minutes. It was an excellent performance by the team. They brought depth; anybody we bring on will do a good job for us, so I'm pleased with everyone today."
Russo also commented on the outcome, proudly arguing that while the team "started out a little flakey," they "put in a good effort and won 7-1. There's absolutely nothing to complain about."
O'Connell praised and congratulated Connors on his "first of many" and acknowledged the talents of
Ryan Doering who received Man of the Match for being "solid in the back and tidying well for the team."
Calgary had 21 total shots, while MacEwan managed five. Brett made 15 saves for the Dinos, while Dylon Powley turned away eight attempts.
The Dinos will return to the pitch on Sunday October 2
nd as they welcome University of Alberta GoldenBears to West Varsity Pitch for their second face-off of the 2016 campaign. The MacEwan University Griffins will stay in Calgary to play the Mount Royal University Cougars. Both games are scheduled for 1:30 kick-off.
