REGINA, Sask. –
Jaylynn Moffatt had 11 kills as the Calgary Dinos took a three-set win over the host Regina Cougars in Canada West women's volleyball action on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The win improves Calgary's record to 6-8 on the season and the Dinos jump from eighth to sixth in the Canada West standings, as both Mount Royal and Thompson Rivers lost on Friday night.
A third-year middle, Moffatt got into her first matches of the conference schedule this weekend for the Dinos and was stellar on Saturday. Her 11 kills came on just 15 attacks, and with just one error led all players with a .667 hitting percentage.
Second-year setter
Erika Myhre led all players with 29 assists and added a team-high 12 digs for a double-double, while
Ali Woolley had 10 kills and nine digs. Libero
Natasha Gordey finished with 10 digs for Calgary.
The bright spot for the Cougars was the play of libero Taylor Ungar, who had a career-high 21 digs to establish a new University of Regina record for most digs in a three-set match – the previous school mark was shared by former liberos Kelly Cowan and Rebecca Rink with 19. Tori Glynn led the Cougars with 11 kills, while setter Erika Burns finished with 21 assists and 11 digs.
After Calgary opened up the first set with a 25-16 win, the second set looked like it would be closer as the two teams mostly traded points for most of the first half of the set. But the Dinos had other ideas, going on an 11-2 run with extended serving runs from both Woolley and
Janna Ogle to turn what had been a 9-9 tie into a nine-point advantage for the visitors. The Dinos ended up hitting .444 as a team in that second set and won it 25-14, then clinched the match with a 25-18 win in the third.
In the thick of the Canada West postseason race, Calgary will now prepare for a tough test next weekend with unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Trinity Western in town.
Regina (1-13) will hit the road next weekend for two matches against a University of Winnipeg team that currently holds a 4-9 Canada West record.
