REGINA, Sask. – It took just a shade under two hours, but the University of Calgary finally took a four-set win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West men's volleyball match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The reason a four-set match took almost two hours to play? Look no further than the first set, which saw the teams battle back and forth for what seemed like an eternity before Calgary finally pulled out a 38-36 win. There were 26 tie scores and eight lead changes in that set, which saw the Dinos finally convert on their eighth set point after a Regina attack went wide.
The Cougars battled back with a 25-23 win in the second to square the match at a set apiece, but it was all Calgary from there. The Dinos hit .467 as a team in a 25-17 win in the third, then were even better in the fourth with a .571 hitting percentage while rolling to a 25-13 match-clinching win.
With the lengthy first set, several players from both teams put up gaudy numbers.
Jackson Maris piled up 61 assists, the second most by a player in a Canada West match this season.
Keith West continued his big weekend with 20 kills and 12 digs, while
Curtis Stockton had 18 kills and led all players with 22 digs.
Alex Cook had 10 kills and a match-high .556 hitting percentage to go along with six blocks, while
Sean Martin (nine kills) and Alexander Bader (eight) both finished just short of double digits.
Jacques Borgeaud had a team-leading 21 digs for the Cougars, the third time in history that a U of R player has broken the 20-dig barrier in a single match – he had 25 in a game during his rookie season, and Christopher Knoop had 20 in one match back in 2008. Andre Borgeaud finished with 16 kills and 10 digs, while Brennan Goski had 11 kills and seven digs.
Calgary remains in third place in the conference standings with an 11-3 record and will host Trinity Western next weekend, while the Cougars (1-13) will hit the road next weekend for two matches at Winnipeg.
