CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos completed the sweep against the University of Alberta Golden Bears downing them 5-3, Saturday Jan. 30th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Continuing their winning ways, Saturday evenings game started in the same fashion as the previous nights' game with the Dinos leading the Golden Bears 3-1 after the first period.
"It was a matter of us figuring it out for the second half of the season, I mean every team in this league is good and every player is good. We're a tight group now and we're figuring it out, hopefully we can keep it going," explained fifth year defenseman
Alex Dzielski on how his team is turning their season around.
On a pass from
Max Ross on Alberta's blue line,
Chris Collins walked across the high slot and fired a wrist shot that
Spencer Edwards tipped blocker side to beat Ryan Demharter.
Alberta countered three minutes later, just after the Dinos had killed off their first penalty of the night. Off of a Dino turnover, Jordan Hickmott fed Kruise Reddick who was all alone in front. Reddick redirected the puck past
Steven Stanford to tie the game.
Calgary continued to pelt the second year goaltender Demhart. It paid off mid-way through the period when the Dinos pulled ahead off of the stick of Collins. Dzielski fired a slap shot on net that Demhart couldn't control as Collins was in front to put home the rebound.
The Dinos would increase their lead on the power play just as the period was ending.
Cain Franson hit
Elgin Pearce with the back door pass, with Demhart out of position Pearce made no mistake putting the puck into the open net.
After running into some penalty trouble late in the second period, that carried into the final stanza the Dinos scrambled to maintain their two goal lead.
The Golden Bears would capitalize on the opportunity early in the third. As the refs hand went up to call another penalty against the Dinos, Hickmott circled the Dinos zone firing a high wrist shot on Stanford's glove side that James Dobrowolski got a piece of to claim his sixth of the season.
Alberta tied it up mid-way through the third when Sawyer Lange beat a screened Stanford with a slap shot from the point.
Calgary would regain their lead just over a minute later. The Golden Bears struggled to clear the front of their net after the Dinos had several opportunities before the puck landed on Dzielski's stick and evidently in the back of the net.
"It felt great. I couldn't imagine a better time to get a game winner. We're on a roll here," explained Dzielski.
The Dinos solidified their win with an empty net goal from
Drydn Dow.
Alberta will host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend, Feb 5-6th for a two game series.
Calgary will head to Winnipeg where they will take on the University of Manitoba on Feb. 5-6th.
"We approach every game the same way, everyone would agree with that. We're hoping for another four points next weekend," said Dzielski
