LANGLEY, B.C. – The Trinity Western had their hands full Saturday night as the visiting No. 7 Calgary Dinos defeated the Spartans 119-75 at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win moves the Dinos to 12-3, while the loss keeps the Spartans winless at 0-12.
The Dinos finished the evening shooting an impressive 56.3 percent, 45-80, from the field and made 51.6 percent, 16-31, from the three point line. While the Spartans finished the night shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 28-67, and 26.9 percent, 7-26 from the three point line.
The Spartans had a balanced scoring attack with five players hitting double digits in scoring, while the Dinos finished with six players in double digits. Kelvin Smith (Los Angeles) with 20 points and three rebounds, Lucas Mannes (Chilliwack, B.C.) with 14 points and five rebounds, and Patrick Vandervelden (Abbotsford, B.C.) with 13 points, on 6-7 from the field, led the Spartans. Thomas Cooper with 28 points and
Jasdeep Gill and
Mitch Ligertwood with 14 points each led the Dinos.
Calgary ended the game early as they outscored TWU 33-12 in the first quarter. The Dinos put up another 30 points in the second quarter to finish the opening 20 minutes with a 63-34 lead, on the back of an impressive 12-19 from the three point line.
The Dinos continued to hit the 30 point mark in the third quarter as they led the Spartans 93-45 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. TWU had their best defensive quarter in the last 10 minutes, being outscored 26-20 as Calgary walked away with the 44 point, 119-75, win.
The Spartans will continue their home stand next week when they host the Brandon Bobcats. Game times at the LEC on Fri. Jan. 29 and Sat. Jan. 30 are set for 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Dinos will have a week off before hosting the Lethbridge Pronghorns Feb. 5 and Feb. 6.
