CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos took their second straight victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars with a 3-1 win on Friday, January 22 at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
After a 2-1 win in double overtime in front of an overwhelming crowd of 12,859 at the Saddledome last night, the Dinos were able to re-focus to complete the sweep thanks to a two goal night from third year forward,
Elgin Pearce.
With the victory, the Dinos improve to 9-13 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 13-9.
"It was definitely tough at first, obviously not having 12,000 fans watching is a little bit different, but I thought we did a good job of sticking with the game plan and creating our own energy," explained Pearce.
The Dinos got on the board first 6:10 into the opening frame when
Elgin Pearce found the back of the net on the rebound off a point shot from
Drydn Dow. With less than five minutes to play in the first, the Cougars answered back to tie the game. Jamie King's low shot through traffic beat Calgary's goaltender
Steven Stanford to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The Dinos ran into some penalty trouble and were forced to kill off five straight penalties, including a two-man advantage for 1:29 to start the second period.
After successfully killing all five penalties, Calgary capitalized on a power play opportunity of their own with just 12 seconds remaining in the middle frame.
Elgin Pearce fed a cross-ice pass to
Kevin King, who buried a one-timer upstairs to give the Dinos a 2-1 advantage going into the third period.
"It was tough, we were a little frustrated when we had those back-to-back penalties but we just stuck with it and killed those penalties off and gained some momentum from that."
The Dinos added to their lead early in the third period.
Cain Franson came in on a partial breakaway and was stopped by Cougars' net minder Colin Cooper, but Pearce was there to bury the rebound for his second of the night, making it 3-1 Dinos.
"
Max Ross made a good turn over at our blue line and I just took it up and made a pass over to Franson and he drove the net and it happened to be sitting there in the crease and I just banged it in," Pearce explained.
Calgary hung on for the win to give them a weekend sweep over their cross-town rivals. The Dinos look to continue their win streak when they face the University of Alberta in a home and home series.
The Dinos play in Edmonton next Friday, January 29 at 7 p.m. MT and in Calgary at Father David Bauer Arena next Saturday, January 30 at 6 p.m. MT.
The Mount Royal Cougars take on the University of Regina Cougars Jan. 29-30 at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary.
