Dinos drop 2OT heartbreaker to Huskies

SASKATOON – Third-year forward John Lawrence scored 1:53 into the second overtime to lift the No. 3 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 4-3 victory Friday night at Rutherford Rink.

Michael Sofillas took the puck from behind the Huskie net to start the rush in the second extra session of the evening. Weaving his way through a pair of defenders as the teams played 3-on-3 hockey, Sofillas found Lawrence breaking to the net. Lawrence dragged the puck around Steven Stanford and jammed it under the Dino goaltender's left pad for the game winner.

Saskatchewan improves to 16-3-0 on the season, while Calgary drops to 7-8-4 with the overtime loss.

After a quiet first, there were five goals scored between the two sides in the second period.

Cameron Blair, Michal Sofillas and Matthew Spafford all tallied in the second period for Saskatchewan. Calgary's Spencer Edwards also found the score sheet in the second. Mitch Cook and Dylan Walchuk each scored in the third period.

Walchuk's deflection of Drydn Dow's point shot, with the Dino's net empty, sent the teams to overtime after it looked like the Huskies might escape with a regulation win.

Saskatchewan built up a 3-1 lead in the second period after Sean Aschim forced a turnover just inside the Calgary zone and found Spafford wide open in front of the net. Spafford, with plenty of time, patiently waited for Stanford to go down before lifting a backhand shot over his pad at 13:40.

Sofillas scored the Huskies second goal on a perfect shot to the top corner, glove side on Stanford on the power-play at 11:52.

The Dinos began their comeback with a goal 5:55 into the third period. Mitch Cook beat Huskie netminder Jordon Cooke short side for his first goal of the year. After a couple of near misses by both teams, Dylan Walchuk tipped in Dow's point shot at 19:31 with an extra skater on the ice.

Cooke was busy in goal making 35 saves for Saskatchewan. Stanford stopped 19 shots in goal for the Dinos.

The two teams face off again Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Rutherford Rink.
