WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over the University of Winnipeg Wes men Sunday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
Kayla Kreutzer (21st minute) and
Amy Hockings (55th minute) scored for the Dinos.
Calgary with the win improves to 5-1 in the Canada West women's soccer standings, in a first-place tie with Saskatchewan, while Winnipeg falls to 1-6-1.
The hometown Wesmen had a great chance to open the scoring. Fifth year midfielder Danielle Bulloch chipped a shot past Dinos 'keeper
Samantha Chang-Foidl but at the last second a Calgary defender kicked the ball aside before it crossed the goal line.
Calgary got its first goal in the 21st minute. Second year midfielder
Kayla Kreutzer headed in a corner kick from Remy Guindon to give the Dines a 1-0 lead.
The Dinos continued to put pressure on the Wesmen soon after, but Winnipeg goalkeeper Justina Jarmoszko kept them at bay as the Dinos went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
In the 55th minute Calgary was able to extend its lead.
Amy Hockings took a pass from
Maddie Lee and beat Jarmoszko to put the Dinos ahead 2-0.
Calgary had 14 total shots in the contest. Winnipeg had three.
Justina Jarmoszko made eight saves in the Wesmen net. Chang-Foidl stopped all three shots directed her way.
Calgary will be on the road next Friday against Alberta and on Sunday at UNBC.
