REGINA – Another week, another huge offensive outburst for the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos as they exploded for 34 points in the second quarter en route to a 72-8 win over the Regina Rams Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.
After a relatively tentative start, the offence scored on its second possession – a 37-yard
Andrew Buckley toss to
Rashaun Simonise – then added four more majors before halftime to go up 41-0 at the break – and the visitors never looked back from there as the offence kept rolling while the defence frustrated the white-clad Rams all night long.
With the win, the Dinos find themselves with a two-game cushion above the traffic jam behind them in the conference standings. With Calgary at 4-0 and Regina now at 0-4, the other four teams are all locked at 2-2 at the midway point of the Canada West season.
"We certainly have a lot of talent," Buckley told Access TV in a post-game interview. "Our effort will determine how far we go this year, and we just need to improve every week. We're very lucky to have so much depth, but we have to be willing to push ourselves and stay focused."
In another stunning offensive display, the Dinos racked up 732 yards while allowing just 283 as the defence played its best game of the season. The Rams were limited to less than 150 yards through the air and not much more than that on the ground.
Doctor Cassama led the way with 9.5 tackles along with a sack, with
Connor McGough and
Cyril Iwanegbe chipping in with five and four tackles, respectively.
It was 44-0 midway through the third when the Rams got outstanding field position on the Calgary 31-yard line after a punt return. Two plays later, Regina broke the goose egg on the scoreboard when Michael Webber found the corner and ran it in from 21 yards out to finally give the home side some life.
That momentum, however, lasted all of 14 seconds as
William Maxwell returned the ensuing kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown. Maxwell would score again late in the game, this time on a 73-yard pass-and-run from backup quarterback
Jimmy Underdahl.
Underdahl, who had a one-yard TD plunge of his own, took over the reins at quarterback in the fourth quarter following one of the best performances of Buckley's career. The reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner completed 21 of 29 passes for 478 yards and four touchdowns: in addition to the 37-yarder in the first quarter, he connected with Simonise again from 42 yards out, with
Austen Hartley from 38, and with
Mac Sarro from 22. It was the fifth-highest single game passing total in school history, and the best since his own 512-yard performance in September 2013 against Manitoba – and the 21 completions moved him into second spot on the Dinos' all-time list in the category with 435.
Missing their starting tailback
Mercer Timmis, the Dinos did lean more heavily on the passing game – but the run game wasn't forgotten as fifth-year running back
Bryce Harper got the chance to start. Harper carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and one particularly impressive touchdown, spinning off defenders and dancing 17 yards into the end zone. He also hauled in four catches for 41 yards.
Simonise was Calgary's top receiver with 106 yards on his four catches, while Sarro added a 71-yard bomb to his 22-yard TD while
Brendon Thera-Plamondon went for 86 yards on his lone reception of the night. Hartley was the most popular target, hauling in six passes for 84 yards.
Kicker
Johnny Mark accounted for 24 of the Dinos' 72 points, hitting all four of his field goal tries – including a career-long 48-yarder – and moving his CIS career scoring record up to 466 points with four games to go. He also made it up to 79 field goals, putting him just five away from the national record in that category.
Calgary (4-0) will look to head into the Thanksgiving bye undefeated when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-2) next Saturday afternoon during the Dinos 'Play in Pink' series, supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at McMahon Stadium.
