Dinos dominant in CFL Draft

CALGARY - It turned into quite the night for the University of Calgary Dinos in the 2015 Canadian Football League Draft Tuesday night, with three players selected in the top 10 and seven off the board overall.

Offensive linemen Sukh Chungh and Sean McEwen went back-to-back in the first round, with Chungh taken No. 2 by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers while McEwen went third overall to the Toronto Argonauts. And, just seven picks later, receiver Jake Harty was selected with the first pick of the second round (10th overall) by the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

In the third round, the Edmonton Eskimos selected linebacker Adam Konar with the 25th overall pick, while long snapper Tanner Doll will join Harty in the nation's capital after his fourth round, 28th overall selection by the Ottawa REDBLACKS. And in the sixth round, defensive lineman Tyler Langlais went 47th overall to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

And with the final choice in the draft, the Calgary Stampeders selected hometown boy Andrew Buckley - the 2014 Hec Crighton Trophy winner - 62nd overall in the 7th round.

The seven Dinos were among the 13 Canada West players selected and easily led the way among CIS schools, with Laval placing second with five. In the past five drafts dating back to 2011, the Dinos have produced 24 picks - and twice (2013, 2015) have put two players in the top three selections.

"It's exciting," said Dinos head coach Wayne Harris. "All the guys are well-deserved - it's a great group of young men that have made the commitment to excellence, and it has paid off for them tonight."

Four of the seven Dinos to be drafted were present at a McMahon Stadium draft party, surrounded by friends and family. And they had plenty to cheer about from the get-go, as Chungh was taken early with the second-overall pick by Winnipeg. While CFL commissioner Jeffrey Orridge was announcing that selection, teammate Sean McEwen was out of the room, on the phone with the Toronto Argonauts. The Argos promptly took him with the No. 3 overall pick.

"It's a dream come true," said MacEwan, a graduate of Calgary's Notre Dame High School. "I'm so happy for these other guys - it just speaks to the quality of the University of Calgary football program. Our coaches are outstanding, and that is demonstrated in a night like tonight.

"My degree is incredibly important to me and my academics are very important to me, so I need to make some decisions about how I do that."

Jake Harty was up next, beaming as his name was announced as the 10th overall selection.

"I'm excited to be able to celebrate this with my family, friends, teammates, and coaches," said Harty. "We work so hard in this program, always striving to get better, and it shows the kind of athletes that Calgary has."

All-Canadian linebacker Adam Konar went 15 picks later to Edmonton, followed three selections after that by Doll - who played linebacker for the Dinos but will head to Ottawa looking to crack the lineup as a long snapper.

"I'm excited to be a part of their organization and take the next step," said Doll. "To go with Jake, we have Jordan Verdone and James Green there, so there's a comfort factor with that. And the success of our program really speaks for itself - we don't just win games, we create pro-ready guys."

Langlais, who was a darkhorse to be chosen after attending the CFL's regional combine in Edmonton, went 47th overall, setting the stage for some anxious moments for the 2015 Hec Crighton Trophy winner. When his name was finally called, the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Andrew Buckley - the newest member of the Calgary Stampeders - the reigning Grey Cup champions.

"I couldn't be happier than to be drafted by my hometown team," said Buckley. "I've been watching the Stamps and a season ticket holder for 18 years, so to get my name called by the Stamps is an absolute dream come true. I thought if any team was going to take a chance on me it was going to be the Stampeders, and it was just an incredible feeling when they called my name."

CFL rookie camps will open in just a few weeks' time, with the season set to kick off June 25.
