Four third period goals forces a decisive Game 3

CALGARY – No. 4 University of Calgary Dinos looked on their way to a Canada West Semi-Final sweep before the No. 9 Mount Royal University Cougars scored four unanswered goals to steal Game 2 and win 5-2 on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Carrying a 2-1 lead into the third period, the Dinos were playing a very smart final frame before an opportunistic tally by Cougars captain Matthew Brown tied the score. Mount Royal continued press and got another bounce in their favour when Tanner Olstad squeezed a shot past the Calgary goaltender for the eventual game-winning goal.

"You knew Mount Royal was going to push. I thought for the most part we controlled the third period until we made a really bad change," described Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "In the playoffs good things are going to happen and bad things are going to happen. You have to be prepared to move on and turn the page."

The series is now tied and will need a Game 3 on Sunday evening to decide a spot in the conference finals and a berth at the University Cup.

In front of another strong crowd in the Dinos' home rink, the first period saw neither team find the back of the net despite good chances at both ends. Reigning CIS Goaltender of the Year Jacob DeSerres made his first start of the playoffs for Calgary, while Dalyn Flette returned to the crease with Cam Lanigan sidelined due to an injury from Game 1.

The Dinos would open the scoring on a goal by Max Ross at the 13:52 mark. Skating in from the point, the fourth-year defenceman made a good move before sneaking the puck past Flette.

With less than four minutes to play in the second period, the Cougars tied the score. With a Calgary power play about to expire, Scott McKay spotted Jamie King for a breakaway. The rookie forward went in alone and beat DeSerres for his second goal of the postseason.

Working hard to take back the lead, Calgary received a great effort from a pair of players who missed Game 1. Brooks Myers mowed his way to the front of the goal and got an attempt off, giving Cain Franson a chance to hop on a rebound and fire it past Flette at the 18:30 mark of the middle frame.

With the Dinos cruising in the third period, a couple of bounces in favour of the visitors changed the complexion of the series quickly. After Brown converted on a routine shot to tie the game, Olstad picked up an errant puck and wasted little time throwing it at the net. The timely marker by Olstad gave Mount Royal the edge they needed with time running out in the third.

"We got caught both times and it is unfortunate. Details matter in games like this," said Howell.

With the net empty for the Dinos in the final minutes, the Cougars buried a couple of goals to round out the scoring at 5-2.

Mount Royal outshot Calgary in the game 30-26. The Dinos went 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Cougars went 0-for-4.

Game 3 will take place Sunday, March 1, at the Father David Bauer Arena tomorrow night. Puck drop is 6:00pm.
