Dinos fall to No. 3 Huskies on the road

SASKATOON - The No. 3 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies used a large first half lead to defeat the visiting University of Calgary Dinos 73-45 Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

 

In the win, the Huskies jumped to a large lead quickly outscoring Calgary 16-8 in the first quarter.  Saskatchewan held a 16-point lead at halftime leading 35-19 after the first two quarters. The Huskies continued the dominance doubling the Dinos 20-10 in the third to lead 55-29. Saskatchewan added another 18 points in the fourth to the Dinos 16.

 

Saskatchewan capitalized on Calgary mistakes scoring 25 points from the Dinos' 18 turnovers in the games.

 

The Huskies finished the night shooting at 54%, while the Dinos shot at 33%.

 

With the win, the Huskies improve to 16-3 on the season and remain tied for first place in the Canada West Pioneer Division with one game remaining in the Canada West women's basketball schedule. Calgary drops to 9-10. Both teams have already secured spots in the playoffs.

 

Leading the Huskies was reigning Canada West MVP Dalyce Emmerson with 22 points and eight rebounds. The post scored 13 points in the first half. CIS-transfer Laura Dally added another 15 points for the Huskies and went 3-for-4 from the arc. Desarae Hogberg scored 12 off the bench.

 

Claire Colborne led the Dinos in the game scoring nine points, while Emma Nieuwenhuizen and Anmol Mattu each tallied eight. Jessica Thielen led the Dinos on the boards with six rebounds.

 

The two teams will battle again Saturday in the final game of the Canada West season. Tipoff is at 6:15 p.m. at the PAC. It can be viewed on canadawest.tv
