CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos claimed their second shutout of the season with a 4-0 win against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Friday evening, Nov. 27th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
"It was a full team effort, everyone competed tonight," stated Dinos goaltender Steven Stanford.
Looking for just their third win at home, the Dinos tried to get on the scoreboard early, outshooting the Thunderbirds 12-7 in the first period.
It wasn't until near the end of the period that Calgary would be the first on the scoreboard. On the power play after several attempts on UBC netminder Eric Williams, Dylan Walchuk passed the puck from behind the net to Chris Collins on the half wall. Collins saw Cain Franson on the point who fired the puck past an unseen Williams.
"We kept the pressure down low," explained Stanford. "It was nice to see especially considering we haven't been scoring a lot lately."
The Dinos contained the puck in the Thunderbirds territory for majority of the second period. Despite both teams running into penalty trouble the Dinos found a way to get the puck past Williams late in the period. Mitch Cook cut across the top of the circle to put a backhand shot on net, Williams couldn't find the rebound. Adam Kambeitz found the rebound however, scoring his third on the season. Coda Gordon picked up a helper on the play.
Calgary continued to find their rhythm on the power play just a minute and a half after their second goal. Gordon picked the puck up just below the UBC blue line passed the puck to Drydn Dow on the point. Dow stepped in and let a low slap shot go on net where Walchuk was waiting to pot in the rebound.
The Dinos finished the night off with an empty net goal at the end of the third period. Stanford stopped all 21 shots that came his way for his third shutout of his CIS career, second as Dino. Stanford's first ever shutout came when he played for UBC.
"Tonight was really nice to get a shutout, especially against my old team," said Stanford. "When you get one it usually means your team is playing good defence. It was big for us."
The two teams will face off again tomorrow evening. Puck is set to drop at six o'clock at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
