No. 4 Dinos take out No. 7 Huskies in straight sets

CALGARY – The No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos defeated the No. 7 Saskatchewan Huskies in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) on Friday night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Dinos now improve to 9-2 while the Huskies drop down to 4-5. The Dinos will have a chance to complete the sweep in their final weekend of play in 2015 tomorrow night. Game time is set for 5:30pm.

"We were very pleased with our performance and preparation today," said Dinos head coach Rod Durrant. "Our guys knew what they needed to do against a very good Saskatchewan team. The Huskies played great defense and they do a lot of good things and we knew that. We're very happy with the outcome."

Calgary was led by outside hitters Keith West and Curtis Stockton with 12 kills each. Captain Connor Frehlich added nine more on offense. Setter Jackson Maris recorded 32 assists in the win and four digs. Alex Cook filled in for middle for an injured Ivan Kartev and recorded two blocks.

"Keith West had a very good night. I thought our outside hitters in general passed the ball well and stayed consistent to allow Jackson to do a very good job setting up the offence. We had a very good offensive night tonight."

"Ivan wasn't able to go tonight and wasn't in the lineup, so we knew we might have had to use Alex Cook. He did a fantastic job and has transitioned really well and played well."

No Huskies were able to reach double digits in their 3-0 loss, but Jordan Nowakowski led the way with seven kills, followed by Andrew Nelson with six. Setter CJ Gavlas recorded 20 assists and a team-high six digs.

In the first, the Dinos took a big lead early on with some great spin serves from Frehlich. They continued to dominate, heading into the technical timeout up 16-9. It was smooth sailing for the Dinos throughout the second half of the set with the offence firing on all cylinders. They went on to win their first set of the match 25-16.

The Dinos had a great start to the second set taking another 12-5 lead. Despite the seven point lead, the Huskies picked up their pace and got within two at 14-12, forcing Durrant to call their first timeout of the match. After the technical, West came up with two big plays to give Calgary a cushioned lead of 19-14. The Dinos took the second 25-16.

In the final set of the night, Calgary was dominate again and Saskatchewan was no match for the Dinos as they won it 25-21.
