Bears no match for Dinos at Calgary Cup

CALGARY - Two wins were the result of a weekend at the Calgary Cup for the University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team when they defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 76-64 in pre-season action at Jack Simpson Gym.

Despite being outscored in the second half, the Dinos' 20-point lead held up to take down their division rivals. 

Newcomer Thomas Cooper was the game-high scorer by a landslide with 25 points on the night. He also grabbed 5 rebounds for the Dinos. Following him was third-year Connor Foreman with 12 points and five rebounds. Second-year Lars Schlueter also hit double digits with ten points and seven rebounds on the night. 

For the Golden Bears, Mamadou Gueye had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds in the loss. Colby Jackson was the only other Bear to hit double digits with 11 points. 

In the first, the Dinos slowly built up their lead, capitalizing on scoring chances and shutting down some of Alberta's offence. Their steady lead throughout the first half ended with a 20-point lead. Newcomer Cooper finished the half with 18 points to top all scorers. The second half saw the Dinos get their lead up to a gap of 24 points and despite some pressure from the Golden Bears in the fourth, the Dinos held on to win it. 

The Dinos host the Mount Royal Cougars on Oct. 16 to continue their preparation for the upcoming Canada West season. They host the Winnipeg Wesmen on Nov. 6 in their home opener.
