Dinos finish first in Prairie Division with sweep of Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos wrapped up their 2015 regular season with a 5-1 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on a sunny, cool Sunday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Calgary picks up their second victory in a row against Winnipeg to finish regular season play with a 8-2-2 record and first place finish in the Prairie Division. Winnipeg with the loss completes their season with a record of 1-10-1.

Dominic Russo (38' and 76') and Lindon Fedoruk (42'and 75') each scored twice for the Dinos. Tom Widdowson added a goal for Calgary in the 51'minute. Amos Ganyea, playing in his final CIS match scored the lone goal for the Wesmen in the 47th minute.

Russo's goals this weekend solidfy the conference scoring title for the fourth-year forward. He is the first player from the University of Calgary to ever win the title in the program's 43-year history and he comes in second all-time in Canada West for most goals scored in a single season with 15 total. On top of that, Russo becomes the best all-time career scorer in the team's history with 24 goals, surpassing Mike Scullion and Izak Lawrence who led, until today, with 22 in their careers.

Russo opened the scoring in the 38th minute taking a pass from Jorge Leon-Gomez and streaked down the left side and put a perfect shot past Wesmen goalkeeper Martin Skiarski. Calgary extended their lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute as Fedoruk took a pass in the slot from Leon-Gomez and beat Skiarski with a low shot to the right corner.

Winnipeg got back in the game right after the halftime break. Amos Ganyea took a corner kick from Aaron Hiddalgo-Mazzei and beat Dinos goalkeeper Hunter Brett in the 47th minute to cut the Calgary lead to 2-1.

Calgary regained a two-goal cushion in the 51st minute when Tom Widdowson picked up a rebound during a goal-mouth scramble to make the score 3-1. The Dinos put the match out of reach scoring two goals in a 40 second span, the first coming off the foot of Fedoruk and the second by Russo to close out the scoring.

The first place finish in the Prairie Division gives the Dinos home playoff advantage next weekend when they host the Trinity Western Spartans, the fourth-place finishers in the Pacific Division. Should the Dinos win their playoff game next Saturday at 2:15pm, they advance to the Canada West Final Four hosted by the top finisher in the Pacific Division.
