Pearce's OT winner gives Dinos first win of the year

VANCOUVER – The visiting Calgary Dinos (1-2-1) handed the UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team (3-0-1) their first regular season loss in what was a tense second weekend matchup between the teams Saturday night with a 3-2 win in double overtime.

The loss brings the 'Birds' three-game streak to an end, while the Dinos record their first victory of the young campaign.

While the Dinos walked away with the W, it could have certainly gone to either team. The game remained tied up at 2-2 from midway through the third, until a goal from Calgary's Elgin Pearce in 3-on-3 OT gave his team its first win of the season.

Spencer Edwards and Cain Franson were the other goal scorers for the Dinos while Anthony Bardaro and Justin Georgeson found the net for the hosts.

Solid OT efforts from the netminders – UBC's Eric Williams and Calgary's Steven Stanford – at both ends of the ice prevented either team from getting the game winner, forcing a 4-on-4 overtime, which gave way to a 3-on-3 period.

Despite the open ice, UBC struggled to get a shot off during 3-on-3 play. At 2:27 into the second OT, Calgary's Chris Collins rocketed up the left wing and lobbed a saucer pass over to Pearce who picked the top right corner and beat Williams.

Calgary had two power play opportunities midway through the first, but weren't able to capitalize on either, thanks in part to a number of blocked passes by the Thunderbirds.

UBC's first solid chances came at 17:30 in the first with back-to-back attempts, but Dinos goaltender Stanford deflected the first with a pad save, then spun around and knocked the rebound out of the air just prior to crossing the goal line.

Despite a 10-5 edge in shots for the Dinos, it was the Thunderbirds who struck first on a power play. With a minute left in the first period, Bardaro sailed up the right wing, deked around two Dinos defenders and sniped a shot from the hash marks into the top right corner of the net.

Calgary responded early in the second frame with Franson, wide open at the side of UBC's net, receiving a nifty spinning pass from Brooks Myers and narrowly beating a sprawling effort from UBC goaltender Williams.

The tying goal sparked noticeable momentum shift towards the Dinos as they spent several minutes predominately in the Thunderbirds' zone, but Williams repeatedly shut the door, keeping things tied at one apiece.

UBC stopped that momentum with a power-play goal at 13:37 of the second as Georgeson's wrist shot from the point sailed through traffic and into the Dinos net.

While the shot count at the end of the second favoured Calgary, 26-13, it was UBC with the one-goal lead at the end of 40 minutes.

The first half of the third period was a steady back-and-forth affair, with both teams getting multiple scoring chances.

Following a scramble in front of the Thunderbirds' net, Edwards snuck the puck past Williams and gave Calgary their elusive second goal, at 8:50.

UBC spent the majority of a late-game power play in the Dinos zone, but a series of great saves from Stanford kept the score at 2-2 heading into overtime.

The Thunderbirds will make the journey to Winnipeg next weekend to play a pair of games against the Manitoba Bisons (1-3).

Calgary and Lethbridge will play a home-and-home series next weekend.
