Dinos find the win column with third-period comeback

SASKATOON – A pair of third period goals helped the University of Calgary Dinos to a 3-2 come from behind win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night in Rutherford Rink.

Entering the third period trailing 2-1, the Dinos got goals from Chelsea Court and Cheyann Newman to record their first victory of the year.

Calgary improves to 1-2-0-1 with the win, while Saskatchewan drops to 3-1.

Newman's goal at 11:39 of the third period would stand up to be the game winner. Kelsie Lang's initial shot on the play was handled by Huskie goalie Jerrica Waltz but the rebound eventually bounced to Newman who sent it to the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Entering the final frame down a goal, Calgary came out of the second intermission looking to take the momentum. After a couple of early chances in the third, the Dinos managed to tie the game up at 5:17 when Chelsea Court got into the Huskie zone and sent a high shot over the blocker of Waltz.

The Dinos opened the game's scoring at 6:02 of the first on the power play. Iya Gavrilova jumped on a loose rebound and chipped it over the shoulder of Waltz to give Calgary an early lead.

Saskatchewan responded in the second with a goal by Paige Anakaer at 10:48. Kennedy Harris created the scoring chance driving the puck hard down the right boards. After beating her defender, Harris threw the puck to the front of the net where the Huskie captain, Anakaer, deflected it up and over the left shoulder of Dinos goaltender Hayley Dowling.

The Huskies would get to Dowling again before the second period was out. Kori Herner got the puck on her stick down the left side, hitting the Calgary zone with speed. Herner sent a shot to the top corner past Dowling to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead after fourty minutes.

Waltz made 30 saves for the Huskies, while Dowling stopped 31 shots for Calgary.

Saskatchewan travels to Lethbridge, Alta. next weekend for a pair of games with the Pronghorns (4-0). Calgary will host the UBC Thunderbirds (1-2-1-0) next weekend.
