Pearce scores shootout winner

CALGARY — The Dinos exacted some revenge from Thursday night's Saddledome loss with a 5-4 shootout win over the Mount Royal Cougars Friday night.

One night after the Crowchild Classic at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the University of Calgary Dinos exacted some revenge with a 5-4 shootout win over the Mount Royal University Cougars.

Similar to last night's game, the Dinos had some early chances on the power play but were unable to convert anything. They had a number of odd-man rushes including a chance for Brooks Myers, who tumbled hard into the Cougars' Dalyn Flette, but the puck stayed out. With just 1:52 left in the first, the Dinos broke the scoreless deadlock when leading scorer Elgin Pearce snuck one by Flette off a cross-crease pass from Danny Gayle. The Dinos finished the period leading 15-6 in shots.

Goals were plentiful in the second period at the Flames Community Arenas. The Dinos would score the first two, with Phillip Tot banging in a rebound and Pearce adding his second of the game off a turnover in front, which he roofed and popped the water bottle. Down 3-0, Mount Royal got their first on a power play as captain Matt Brown fired a shot that was blocked, but deflected past Jacob DeSerres. In the dying seconds of the frame, Mackenzie Johnston took the puck off a turnover in his own zone and raced down while the Cougars were shorthanded. He slid a pass across to Brown, who sniped one by DeSerres with just 0.5 seconds on the clock to draw the home squad within one.

On the strength of their power play, the Cougars tied up the game thanks to a bullet shot off a one-timer by Johnston. The Dinos took the lead once again after Dan Gibb picked off a pass in the neutral zone and set up Dylan Walchuk for a perfect one-timer that beat Flette glove side. Trailing by a goal and just under a minute left, Cody Cartier found Zack Henry found himself alone in the slot and wired a shot in to tie things up.

Both overtime periods featured a flurry of scoring chances for the two teams. The best play was a save by Flette as he slid across the crease to flat-out rob Kodie Curran right on the doorstep.

In the shootout, Pearce notched the only goal, beating Flette stick side to give the Dinos the victory.

Cartier, Brown and Johnston each had three points in the loss, while Pearce recorded two goals. The shots were 40-39 for the Mount Royal.

Mount Royal wins the season series for the first time at 3-0-1. The Dinos hold a one-point advantage for second place in the Canada West.

The Dinos play a home-and-home series against Lethbridge next weekend before closing out the regular season with two games at Regina.
