Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Lindsay Franco, Communications

Dinos remain undefeated through two weekends of play

CALGARY - A goal has still yet to be scored on the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team, and that stayed the same after a 2-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins on Sept. 14 at West Varsity Pitch.

In their first game on home soil and their first game against the newly added MacEwan Griffins to the conference, Dinos didn't disappoint the crowd, or their coach. Head coach Troye Flannery was impressed with his teams play on the day.

"I thought it was a good performance. We had a lot of respect today for MacEwan. They're well coached and they've had tons of success where they've previously played, so we were a little worried about them. We wanted to come out and play front foot football which I think we did. I'm pretty proud of the girls, it was a good performance."

The teams looked evenly matched throughout the first, with both squads getting their game legs going. Both teams found their way onto opposite sides of the field before the Dinos capitalized. In the 20th minute, first-year Kayla Kreutzer skillfully carried the ball into traffic through the box and found rookie Maddie Fritze who simply finished the play with a low ball to the left corner of the net to open up the scoring. The pressure only increased from Calgary after that, but the half ended 1-0.

In the second, first-year Justine Chiba doubled the Dinos' lead. After a chance on a cornerkick, the Dinos got another one when the Griffins tried to clear it. With Maddie Lee taking the corner, she found the head of Chiba who knocked it into the net. It was a combination of players that lead the Dinos to the third win of the season.

"I think everyone was pulling in the right directions, but Lauren Vernon bossed in the midfield, Maddie Fritze scored a timely goal and Justine Chiba also got a goal. A couple of kids scoring their first CIS goals is what I always like. But in general, our back four has been immense. Sam in goal has been great as well."

It's no secret that the Dinos have yet to allow a goal in the first two opening weekends of play. Flannery is hoping to continue this streak as long as possible, but is also realistic about the rest of the season to come.

"The opposite of last year where we were scoring lots, and maybe no keeping them out as much as we wanted to, but we've been pretty tidy so far on that goal line, but it's a tough league and I'm sure we'll have our moments. I'm happy with it thus far."

The Dinos will host a double-header next weekend against the Saskatchewan Huskies, Sept. 20-21. Both game times are set for 12pm.
