Comeback win gives Dinos split against ‘Bears

CALGARY – Jason Genee netted the game-winning goal in the 41st minute for the University of Calgary Dinos as they picked up their first victory of the season, 2-1 over the No. 9 University of Alberta Golden Bears at West Varsity Soccer Pitch on Sunday afternoon.

While it is still early in the season, the Dinos' fourth game of the year was a pivotal one. After falling behind early, Calgary was able to respond with a pair of goals to end the first half. The Dinos' backend shined in the second 45 minutes as they supported goaltender Colin Hasick en route to three points.

Kieran Lane-Oppenheim and Genee scored for Calgary. Tolu Esan's third goal of the weekend was the lone tally by the Golden Bears.

"We challenged the boys that we needed a much better 'team effort', especially on defence," noted fifth-year Dinos head coach Brian McDonnell. "Everyone chipped in and we did a good job doubling up their wingers. It was a much better defensive performance."

Calgary now holds a 1-3-0 record, while Alberta slips to 3-1-0 with their first loss of the campaign.

For the second-straight day, the Golden Bears struck first. Taking the ball up the left side, Esan fired a sharp-angle shot at Hasick. The ball popped loose where Esan then kicked it in for a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

Waiting little time evening the score, the Dinos would find the score sheet in the 25th minute. Taking a cross at the left side of the box from Massimo Megna, Lane-Oppenheim beat the Alberta goalkeeper, Connor James, to make it 1-1.

The game looked like it would go into the half tied, but Calgary was able to connect after a yellow card to the Golden Bears. Given a kick at the top of the box, Andrew Hood's attempt got tangled into a maze of players, where Genee emerged with the ball and scored.

The second half was filled with action, but goals were hard to come by at both ends. The Golden Bears' best chance to tie the game came with 20 minutes left when Marcus Johnstone found himself with the ball in front of the net. The fifth-year striker wired a point-blank shot on goal, but was denied on a fantastic stop by Hasick.

"The door opened for Colin [Hasick] today and he did more than his share. He came in and took the reins," said McDonnell when asked about his switch in goal for Sunday's match. "It wasn't anything that Hunter Brett wasn't doing. It was about shaking things up."

Alberta continued to press until the final whistle but couldn't find a hole on the Dinos' third-year goalie.

Alberta outshot Calgary 29-12 in the match. Hasick made 16 saves, including 10 in the second half alone. James turned away seven balls for the Golden Bears.

The Dinos will host the Winnipeg Wesmen in a pair of games next weekend at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch from Sept. 20-21. Both games start at 2:15pm.

Returning home for games on Sept. 20-21, the Golden Bears will host the Mount Royal Cougars in two contests next weekend.
