Dinos complete sweep of Huskies

SASKATOON - Three University of Calgary Dinos combined for 43 kills in a 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22) win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Kate Pexman led the trio with 17 kills, while Janna Ogle tallied 14 and Ali Woolley recorded 12. Ogle also had 15 digs in the win.

Anne Hanbidge led Saskatchewan in the match recording 13 kills, two service aces and 12 digs. Emmalyn Copping and Jenelle Sokolski each recorded 10 kills in the match. Libero Jennifer Hueser matched Hanbidge's 12 digs.

With the win, the No. 9 ranked Dinos improved to 6-4 after completing the weekend sweep, while Saskatchewan drops to 3-5 on the season. A night earlier, the Dinos won 3-0 (26-16, 25-23, 25-11).

Calgary pulled to a large lead to begin the first set and expanded it to six points at 19-13. The Huskies couldn't recover losing 25-19.

Trading points in the second set, the Huskies and Dinos were tied 14 times in the frame. Both teams look liked they were pulling away building two-point leads, but mistakes would send the ball back to the other side. Tied at 24 after a Copping kill that found an empty spot, Saskatchewan moved to match point when a Dinos attack sailed long. Handbidge sealed the 26-24 win with a service ace.

Tied at four in the third set, two blocks by Emily Humbert and Sokolski and a Calgary error gave the Huskies a 7-4 lead. But Calgary recovered and pulled to a 12-12 tie with the Huskies. An Amber Adolf service run that included two kills by Woolley and a Saskatchewan error put the Dinos ahead 16-13. The Huskies couldn't recover and Calgary remained in control to the 25-20 win.

Trading points in the fourth frame, the Huskies took a two-point lead at 6-4. Saskatchewan continued the run outscoring the Dinos 6-3 to lead 12-7. Calgary scored the next three points and eventually pulled into a 14-14 tie. The Dinos were the first to the technical timeout after a Huskie service error. The two traded points until the Dinos moved to match point after a service ace. A Huskie attack that sailed long gave the Dinos a 25-22 win.

The Huskies meet the UBC Okanagan Heat on the road next weekend, while Calgary returns home to host the Regina Cougars.
