Dinos offence shines in huge victory over Spartans

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos excel in their best offensive performance of the season, defeating the Trinity Western Spartans by a score of 95-72 on Nov. 28 at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Dinos obtain their first winning record of the season tonight, improving to 5-4, as the Spartans drop below .500 to 4-5.

Calgary was led by Jessica Thielen, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Claire Colborne, Kristie Sheils and Clarise Jennings also recorded double digits for the Dinos, putting up 14, 13, and 12 points, respectively.

Trinity Western forward Kayla Gordon led her team recording 15 points, followed by Chantelle Martin with 14 and Kristin Ford with 13.

The Dinos took a quick lead, going up 4-0 in the first minute of the game, but the Spartans answered back with four straight points from forward Laurissa Weigl. The two teams exchanged leads through the middle of the quarter, but back-to-back baskets from Thielen and Sheils put the Dinos up by four.

The final 30 seconds of the first quarter were filled with action, featuring two baskets from Trinity Western's Gordon and a three-pointer from Calgary's Jennings, which brought the quarter to a close with a score of 19-15 for the Dinos.

The Calgary offense really took off in the second quarter, going on a seven point run in the first two minutes. A three point play from Gordon kept the Spartans within 10, but two 3-pointers from Shinelle Handziuk, followed by quick baskets from Thielen and Sheils had the Dinos ahead by 20 with two minutes remaining in the half.

A three-pointer from Claire Colborne in the final 10 seconds put the Dinos up 53-31 going into halftime, outscoring Trinity Western by a huge margin of 34-16 in the second quarter.

Calgary had a slow start to the second half, as they were outscored 7-0 in the first two minutes, resulting in an early time-out call from Dinos coach, Damian Jennings. The Dinos quickly found their game again, with a three point play from Brianna Ghali, followed by three consecutive baskets outside the arc from Ashley Hirons, Clarise Jennings, and Claire Colborne.

Despite four consecutive points for the Spartans from Kayla Gordon, the Dinos maintained their advantage as they took a 74-53 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter started slowly for both teams, with only one basket recorded in the first two minutes. Trinity Western point guard Chantelle Martin put up four consecutive points midway through the quarter, but it was too little too late as the Dinos cruised to a 95-72 victory.

The Dinos seem to be gaining momentum as the season progresses, as they currently hold a three game winning streak and recorded a season high in points tonight. "I think not only for myself, but for a lot of the girls on the team, we're starting to figure out our roles and how we click together which is really fun," Jessica Thielen remarked after the game.

Calgary looks to extend their win streak as they face the Spartans again tomorrow night, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. M.T. at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
