CALGARY – The No. 9 University of Calgary Dinos claimed their fourth win in a row as they knocked off the University of Regina Cougars 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 22-25, 25-12) at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
The Dinos top scorer on Saturday was Kate Pexman with 11 kills, while Ali Woolley and Janna Ogle were also big with nine each. Pexman also had a big game in the digs department, scoring 10. Jordhynn Guy finished the game with a team-leading 31 assists.
Michelle Sweeting's 14 kills was by far the most for the Cougars. Leah Shevkenek had nine kills and was supported by Chelsea Ziolkowski who had eight. Shevkenek also topped the Cougars with 28 assists in the match.
The Dinos now improve to 8-4 as they battle to keep their place near the top of the Canada West standings, while the Cougars drop to 3-7.
Calgary took an early lead in the first set, but the score remained close until the Dinos pulled away from a 15-12 game. The home side had a lead as big as seven and would maintain that edge as they took advantage of 12 Regina errors.
Carrying momentum over, the Dinos controlled the second set and took advantage of some sloppy play by their opposition. Kate Pexman put six-straight points on the board to put the Cougars on their heels, while Jaylynn Moffatt was also key with runs at the beginning of end of the second.
A huge set by Tori Glynn gave Regina some life in the third. A four-point run and a pair of aces by the server put the Cougars up by five. Calgary closed the gap in the late stages, but Regina was able to hang on and send the game to a fourth set.
The Dinos controlled the opening points of the fourth, scoring six of the first seven points. Regina attempted to bring the score close when they converted with four-straight hits, but Calgary rebounded and put the match out of reach, eventually claiming the set by 13 points.
The Dinos will be on the road next weekend to B.C. as they face the No. 8 Trinity Western University, Nov. 21-22.
Regina will head home to host the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat, Nov. 21-22.?
