REGINA – The University of Regina's women's basketball team moved to 3-2 on the season after a 77-54 win over Calgary on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Alyssia Kajati led the Cougars in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the Canada West schedule. Jennilea Coppola filled the stat sheet with six points, six blocks, and five rebounds, while Katie Polischuk hit four triples and scored 14 points and Charlotte Kot chipped in with 13 points.
Calgary's
Jessica Thielen had a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds and four steals, while
Anmol Mattu came off the bench to score 10 points for the Dinos. Calgary (2-3) finished the game just 18-for-76 (23.7%) from the field in the loss.
Calgary kept it close for most of the opening half, but the Cougars closed out the second quarter on a 10-3 run and that would set the tone for the third. The Cougars outscored Calgary by a 21-5 margin in the third quarter to take a stranglehold on the game, at one point scoring 15 consecutive points to turn a 10-point lead into a 25-point advantage.
The Dinos got no closer than 17 the rest of the way as the Cougars cruised to their third consecutive Canada West victory despite committing 29 turnovers. Though the Cougars attempted 29 less field goals than Calgary – largely due to their turnover issues – they overcame that by shooting the lights out and rebounding, ending the game 29-for-47 (61.7%) from the field including 7-for-12 from three-point range while enjoying a 49-30 advantage on the glass.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (6:00, canadawest.tv).
