Kreutzer's two-fer keeps Dinos undefeated at home

CALGARYKayla Kreutzer tallied both goals for the home side as the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer squad secured an undefeated home record in 2014 with a 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon.

Kreutzer's pair came in the third and 60th minutes as the Dinos picked up where they left off in Saturday's 5-0 win over the Wesmen. Calgary finishes the season 4-0-1 at home, improving its record to 6-1-3 with the win, while Winnipeg falls to 1-7 on the campaign.

"These back-to-back weekends you always worry as a coach if they're going to respond and work on the details, especially after the result we got yesterday," said Dinos head coach Troye Flannery. "I was a little disappointed, we were a bit flat and we weren't as ruthless as we can be…having said that, that's probably a little picky. We got the result we wanted, we got six points, we end the year at home undefeated, so I have to be happy with that, especially with how young we are."

As they had Saturday, the Dinos struck early after a good push to begin the contest. In just the third minute, Jordan Smith's pass deflected off a Winnipeg defender onto the foot of Kreutzer on the right side. The first-year Haskayne School of Business student went one-on-one with Wesmen 'keeper Taylor Thorkelsson and beat her to the short side, giving the Dinos a 1-0 lead.

From there, the field continued to tilt toward Calgary as the Dinos peppered the Winnipeg goal with 29 shots fired in its direction, forcing Thorkelsson into 11 saves on the day. Winnipeg managed just seven shots and three on goal in the contest.

Calgary's persistence paid off again in the 60th minute when Kreutzer again found herself with the ball inside the area. She lifted a shot that arced over the outstretched arms of Thorkelsson and slid in just under the bar to give Calgary the 2-0 lead. Carmen Lee drew the assist on the tally.

Calgary goalkeeper Samantha Chang-Foidl had a quiet day, recording just three saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

The six-point weekend improves the Dinos' chances of hosting a first-round playoff game with one of the top two spots in the Prairie Division – but there's still work to do to lock that up.

"We have the head-to-head against the teams we're competing with," said Flannery. "We need to take care of business next weekend, which is tough – it's away, Manitoba is a good side. We have some work left, but the intention is to finish top-two and play here, because it's tough to play here."

The Dinos wrap up the regular season with a two-game series next weekend against the Manitoba Bisons (3-4-1) in Winnipeg.
