Missed chances cost Dinos in Crowchild Classic rematch

CALGARY – Nine power plays and 35 shots were not enough to get more than one goal past Dalyn Flette on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena as the Mount Royal University Cougars edged the No. 2 University of Calgary Dinos 2-1.

Now 9-0 on the year, including exhibition games, the Cougars were building off a 3-1 win on Friday night and continued to grind away in the same fashion. A controversial goal in the first period gave Mount Royal a one-goal lead heading into the third period when MacKenzie Johnston's point shot doubled that edge. Two goals was all Mount Royal needed as Flette lead the Cougars to their second-straight sweep.

"They are well coached this year and they worked hard, you can't take that away from Mount Royal. We definitely have some work to do," explained Dinos team captain Kevin King. "They had us frustrated and we started to do uncharacteristic things."

After a sweep in their opening weekend, the Dinos now slip to 2-2-0 on the season. The Cougars are now 4-0-0 in conference play.

"We aren't playing with enough desperation and enough sacrifice. As good as Flette played, we didn't make life hard for him by getting in front of the net," commented Calgary bench boss Mark Howell. "It is completely unacceptable for us to play the way we did this weekend. We need to learn to take care of the process and not focus so much on the result."

A slow first period saw only one goal reach the scoreboard. A turnover at the Mount Royal blue line resulted in a breakaway for Derek Huisman. After stripping the puck from a Calgary defender, Huisman skated in alone and sent a backhand shot on Jacob DeSerres. The puck went behind the Dinos' netminder, but never seemed to clearly cross the goal line. Despite that, the referee closest on the play signalled a goal, giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.

Three straight Mount Royal penalties gave Calgary every chance they needed to tie the game. 16 Dino shots were fired in the second period at Flette, but the fourth-year goaltender was able to stop them all.

The Dinos best chance to score came four minutes into the middle frame. Set up on the left side of the crease, Elgin Pearce appeared to tuck the puck past the Cougars' goaltender. The referee initially signalled goal on the play, but quickly reversed the call because the puck never completely crossed the line.

The second stanza ended on a thunderous note after a pair of loud hits by Rylan Wiest and King to set the tone for a pivotal final frame.

Patiently outwaiting the Dinos' attack, the Cougars established a two-goal lead at the 6:18 mark of the third period. A point shot by Johnston found its way through a maze of bodies and past DeSerres, who was screened on the play. The marker was the rearguard's second of the season.

Calgary continued to press for their first goal of the game and would have to wait till the final minute to get it. On their ninth power play of the night, Max Ross's shot from the blue line was knocked down in front by Chris Collins. Both teams had bodies digging for the puck, but it was Adam Kambeitz who grabbed it and broke the goose egg with his first of the year.

Still needing another, the Dinos pulled DeSerres again for an extra attacker – but this time the Cougars controlled the play. Mount Royal hemmed Calgary in their own end and would take the puck with only seconds left on the clock to finish the weekend.

"Winning in this league is hard, last year we accepted how hard it was to win," said Howell. "Right now, we are just complicating the game. You have to work hard to win games and we aren't doing that."

Calgary outshot Mount Royal 35-20. The Dinos went 1-for-9 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-5.

Next weekend, the Dinos will take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns in a home-and-home set. Calgary will host the first half of the two-game set on Friday, Oct. 10 at the Father David Bauer Arena with a 7:00pm puck drop.
