Offence struggles in season-opening loss to Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up their 2014-15 Canada West regular season schedule with a 63-49 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos Friday night in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg (1-0) was led by third-year guard Megan Noonan's game high 21 points and seven steals. Fifth year guard Stephanie Kleysen added 12 points while third year guard Kerri Kuzbyt also scored 12. Skylar Boulanger grabbed a game high eight rebounds.

Fourth-year post Kelsey Lund led Calgary (0-1) with 14 points. Ashley Hirons was next with eight points, while Jessica Thielen led the Dinos in rebounds with six.

Winnipeg made a statement early on racing out to a quick 23-8 lead after the opening quarter. Noonan caught fire in the final 1:20 of the quarter scoring six consecutive points.

Calgary put the brakes on the Wesmen offensive attack in the second frame holding Winnipeg to 10 points in the quarter while scoring 18 of their own to head into the halftime break trailing 33-26.

A quick 6-2 run by the Wesmen extended their lead into double-digits once again to start the third quarter. Winnipeg continued to put pressure on the Dinos, especially the duo of Noonan and Kuzbyt who had back to back three point plays to put Winnipeg ahead 47-35 heading into the final frame.

Winnipeg held their ground outscoring the Dinos 16-14 in the fourth to make the final tally 63-49.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.
