CALGARY – Just one goal was needed for the Alberta Golden Bears to overtake the Dinos and continue their post season on Oct. 26 at the Canada West men's soccer quarterfinals.
On a cold and windy afternoon at West Varsity Pitch, it was Alberta's goal in the 38
th minute that ended up being the game winner. The Dinos are now eliminated from postseason contention.
"Overall it was just our quality of play in the final third," said Dinos head coach
Brian McDonnell. "We struggled and just didn't generate enough quality scoring chances. We got in behind them a couple times in the first, but in the second half we struggled to go against the wind and get into any rhythm going forwards."
The Dinos has the wind at their backs in the first half, making it easy to get lots of chances early on, but it was the Golden Bears that found a way to capitalize. A pass from Mohamed Teliani found Jermele Campbell in the middle of the 18-yard box. Campbell made no mistake, sending the ball to the left corner on a low shot.
In the second half, the Dinos had trouble with the wind, making it hard to keep possession. Defender David Agyeman kept a close watch on Dinos leading goal scorer
Dominic Russo and Calgary had trouble putting the ball in the back of the net.
Looking back on the season, McDonnell was pleased with all of the team's accomplishment, but knows more work needs to be put in for the year's to come.
"It was a fantastic regular season. The guys have everything to be proud about for this year with a nine-game win streak and setting a school record for points and wins so there's lots to be happy about, but to take the next step we need to start performing in the post season. We've kind of established ourselves competitively as a consistent regular season performer, but we need to take that next step in the post season."
Some key returnees to the Dinos will help shape Calgary's success next season.
"Zator was fantastic today and will definitely be a leader again next season. Russo and Hood will also be relied on again heavily for a couple years and then hopefully some new pieces can come in and step up."
The Dinos finished the regular season with a 9-3 record, the best in school history. They also went on an unprecedented nine game win streak and finished with 27 points, another two records broken on the course of the season.
