'Horns no match for No. 9 Dinos

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The University of Calgary Dinos jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 32-14 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada West women's rugby action Thursday.

From the start of the match, the 'Horns did not have an answer for the strength of the Dinos scrums and rucks, with the Dinos winning majority of their own scrums and turning the ball over during 'Horns scrums.

With the win the Dinos improve to 2-1 on the season and the 'Horns with finish the 2014 season with a 1-3 record.

Only five minutes into the opening half, Dino Elysa Sandron broke free, chewing up a large chunk of the field and putting the ball deep into the Pronghorn end. Off a ruck , Dino Samantha Crandell was able to push through and score the game's first try. Kate Scotland made good on the convert to put the Dinos up 7-0.

Seven minutes later, the Dinos were back at it. Off the sequence of scrums from the 'Horns five yard line, the Dinos were finally able to gain clean possession and a sequence of passes out wide sprung Sandron for a try of her own in the far corner.

A couple good runs by the 'Horns pushed the ball into Dinos territory but the Dinos defence held strong and their prowess in the scrums and rucks helped them to turn the ball over.

Continuing with the dominance in the scrums and rucks, Natasha Loucks scored the Dinos' third try of the opening half. Scotland's convert hit the upright and left the score 17-0 in favor the Dinos.

Before the half was out, Scotland hit a penalty goal to round out the first half scoring and pushed the score to 20-0 at the break.

Immediately after restart, the Dinos pushed the ball into the 'Horns end and Jade Menin Naglis touched the ball down for the Dinos fourth try in only the first minute of the second half.

After kicking the ball deep into the Dinos end, the 'Horns were able to keep the ball in the Dinos end, but strong tackling from the Dinos kept the 'Horns attack at bay, until speedster Nicole Ronsky broke free and touched the ball down for the 'Horns first try. Sarah Gordon hit the try to cut the Dinos lead to 27-7.

Despite holding territorial control for large chunks of the remaining time in the second half the 'Horns were not able to break through the Dino defence until the final three minutes of play. Fourth-year back row Ashley Delaney was finally able to punch through the Dinos line, touching the ball down almost under the uprights. Gordon hit her second convert to make the score 27-14 but that would be as close as the 'Horns would get.

Into injury time, D'Arcy Dickinson broke a 30 yard run, setting the Dinos up for one final score. Ellen McGregor was the beneficiary of a couple of passes, stringing the 'Horns out and touching down the ball in the far corner.

The Dinos will head north Sunday to face the Alberta Pandas in a battle for top spot in the conference while the 'Horns will have to sit and wait for the results to determine the final seeding for the Canada West tournament, which will be hosted by the Dinos at McMahon Stadium Oct. 17-19.
