Dinos top Cougars, head into ‘bye’ with second-straight sweep

CALGARY – Leading by three going into the third period, the No. 6 University of Calgary Dinos came away with a 3-2 victory over the University of Regina Cougars at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Continuing to preach consistency and focus, Mark Howell's team came out and played a well-rounded game on Saturday night. Mitch Kilgore was key for the Cougars, making 39 saves, but a goal with 0.3 seconds left in the second period ended up as the game-winner as the Dinos grabbed their fourth-straight decision.

"We were a lot more consistent tonight. In the second they came out hard, but we kept our focus and had a strong finish," explained Howell. "Jake made some really big saves at the end and we just gritted our teeth and got it done."

The Dinos go into the break with a 6-2-0 record, while the Cougars remain without a win in eight games.

"We started off really well in the first period, came hard in the second and were able to weather the storm at the end," said Alex Dzielski who led all skaters with two points. "I thought I played hard as usual. It was good to get a couple of points, but the most important part is we got the win."

For the second consecutive game, the Dinos built their effort around a strong first period. Calgary fired 19 shots on goal and opened the scoring with a tally at the 12:28 mark. Taking the puck behind the goal, Chris Collins emerged at the right side of the blue paint where he sent a shot past Kilgore for his fourth of the year.

Having one of his busiest nights as a Dino, Cain Franson registered eight shots and collected his fourth goal of the season mid-way through the second period. After a great effort by Dzielski to keep the puck in the offensive zone, Franson roofed a slick backhand shot past Kilgore to give the home side a 2-0 advantage.

With two Cougars in the box with seven seconds left in the middle frame, the Dinos went to work and connected for a last-second marker. Winning the faceoff to the left of Kilgore, the Calgary cycle got the puck to Elgin Pearce with just seconds remaining. The second-year forward made no mistake burying the chance for his fourth of the campaign with 0.3 showing on the scoreboard.

Playing a well-executed game, Calgary seemed on their way to another win when a couple of giveaways brought the score close. Goals four minutes apart in the latter stages of the third by Austin Bourhis and Cody Fowlie brought the Cougars within a goal with six minutes remaining.

"I thought our defence was really good today," commented Dzielski. "A couple of errors that resulted in goals doesn't mean we had a bad game."

Regina pulled their netminder with just over a minute remaining and battled to tie the game. Jacob DeSerres made an outstanding stop in the final minute to rob Miguel Pereira of a sure goal before the Dinos did well to clear their end of any more opportunities.

Calgary outshot Regina 42-26. The Dinos went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Cougars went 0-for-2.

Men's hockey will have a bye-week next weekend before returning to action at the end of October. The Dinos will host the Saskatchewan Huskies from Oct. 31 – Nov. 1 at the Father David Bauer Arena. The Cougars will also be at home after the bye, welcoming the UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of games.
