Dinos suffer first loss of the season

CALGARY – In their third marathon match in as many games, the No. 6 University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team fell to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 5-25, 18-16) in their home opener on Oct. 17.

The Dinos drop to 2-1 on the season, while the WolfPack improve to 1-2, locking up their first win since 2012. Thompson Rivers went winless last season. Their last win was Feb. 10, 2012.

The see-saw match saw the Dinos came back down a set twice in both the second and fourth. In the fifth, it was some deep floaters that proved to be a difficulty for the Dinos to pass. Despite some back from an 11-6 deficit to tie it at 13, Calgary was unable to pull off the ultimate comeback.

"I don't feel like we came out prepared to play," said Dinos head coach Natalie Gurnsey. "We came out scared and nervous and we underestimated our opponent. They played a really solid match. I feel like we found ways to grease ourselves to a five-setter, but I don't feel like we really ever got into our Dinos style of play. We definitely need to expect more from ourselves and we have to appreciate what it takes to compete at this level."

Third-year Ali Woolley scored a team-high 10 kills for the Dinos. She was followed by rookie Kate Pexman who added nine kills and 13 digs. Both Janna Ogle and Jaylynn Moffatt scored another eight kills each for Calgary. Fifth-year libero Amber Brown picked up a game-high 16 digs.

"Kate Pexman stood out for me tonight because she made some key digs in the fifth that kept us alive in that set and offensively she put the balls away."

For the WolfPack, Iuliia Pakhomenko led all players with 19 kills on the night. Outside hitter Krista Hogewoning added 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Setter Kara Twomey recorded 37 assists and 11 digs for Thompson Rivers.

After both teams found their footing in the opening two sets and the game tied at one, the WolfPack came out on top in the third, with Calgary a little disorganized. Some tough serves from Hogewoning allowed Thompson Rivers to go ahead 25-20, but the Dinos weren't done just yet.

In the fourth, both teams did a 180, with the Dinos allowing just five points. In what was one of the quickest wins in the conference this season, Calgary forced a fifth winning it 25-5.

In the final set, the Dinos found themselves in a 11-5 hole, but fought their way back to tie the game at 13. Despite their best efforts, and with three match points to win it, it was Thompson Rivers who pulled off the win in extra points by a score of 18-16.

"We're going to play more disciplined and come back tomorrow with some adjustments against them for what they did to us offensively. We'll come back and play better defensively as well."

The Dinos will rematch the WolfPack at 5pm tomorrow night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
