BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen kept their playoff hopes alive while officially ending those of the Dinos Friday night with a straight-sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-23) victory.
Winnipeg with the win improves to 7-12 and remains two games back of the final playoff spot in the Canada West Women's Volleyball standings. Calgary with the loss drops to 5-14.
Fifth year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 15 kills and two service aces. Third year left side Ozana Nikolic returned to the lineup and finished with 14 kills and 13 digs. Fifth year middle Alicia Perry and Chelsea Jones each had a pair of blocks.
Calgary was led by
Ali Woolley's 14 kills, 11 defensive digs and two blocks.
Janna Ogle had six kills and nine digs.
In the opening set Winnipeg held a slim 13-12 in the early stages but Calgary responded scoring four straight points to take a 16-13 lead into the technical break. The Wesmen duo of Kruschel and Nikolic came thru with timely kills to help Winnipeg jump out to a 20-17 lead. Winnipeg gained control of the set soon after scoring five of the next six points, led by a pair of Kruschel kills to lead 24-18 eventually closing out the set 25-21.
Winnipeg carried the momentum into the second set racing out to a 16-9 at the technical break. Winnipeg did not let up and went on to win the set 25-13. Winnipeg had a hitting percentage of .375 and only committed three errors in the frame.
Calgary gained the advantage in a tight third set, leading 16-15 at the technical break. The teams exchanged points all the way to 23-23 until Kruschel pounded home back to back kills to close out the match with a 25-23 win in the third set.
The two teams will meet in the late match Saturday night. Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MT.
