CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team snapped their ten game losing streak on Jan. 24 when they defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 28-26, 27-25, 15-7) at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Dinos captured just their second win at home of the season and their fifth overall, improving to 5-12. The Huskies drop to 7-10.

Rookie Janna Ogle was the star of the game, recording a game-high and career-high 23 kills in the match. Ali Woolley followed closely behind with 19 kills and 13 digs. Rookie Brianna Solberg added 15 digs and setter Jordhynn Guy recorded 46 assists.

For the Huskies, Candace Hueser scored a team-high 17 kills and middle Kayla Tycholiz added another 16. Emily Humbert also reached double digits with 10 kills. Libero Haley Williams recorded a game-high 20 digs and setter Jina Baker added a game-high 48 assists.

The Huskies jumped out to a four-point lead early in the first set, with the Dinos still getting warm and finding their stride. A number of hitting errors from Calgary allowed Saskatchewan to grow their lead to eight points at the technical timeout.

Despite the Dinos best efforts, the Huskies would easily complete the first set with a win at 25-18.

In the second, the tables were turned as the Dinos gained a 6-1 lead, forcing the Huskies to use a timeout early on. Saskatchewan didn't start to close in until after the technical timeout when a few points got them with three at 18-15.

It was thanks to offence generated by Ogle and Woolley that the Dinos were able to gain momentum and run with it, tying up the game at one with a 25-18 for themselves.

In the third, Calgary was holding down a two-point lead until some hitting errors from the Huskies pushed their lead to five at 11-6. After the technical in which the Dinos led 16-10, it was the Huskies that picked up the offence. The visitors finally tied the game up at 18 with an ace, forcing head coach Natalie Gurnsey to call a timeout.

From there, it was the Huskies that took their first lead of the set, but the score would shift a number of times and eventually end up in the favour of the Dinos as Ogle earned the final kill of the set in extra points. Calgary took a 2-1 lead with a 28-26 third-set win.

The fourth set was close throughout the beginning as the score was still tied up at nine before the Dinos began to pull away. At the technical timeout with Calgary up 16-11, Ogle has already recorded 17 kills, and Woolley was right behind her with 16 of her own.

Their lead wouldn't last long though as the Huskies would come off the timeout with a quick four place including two aces from Emmalyn Copping to get within one. Saskatchewan finally found a way to tie the set up at 19 and once again took until the final points to take their first lead. The Huskies defence was finally coming together, making it hard for the Dinos to score some key points at the end of fourth. Saskatchewan forced a fifth with a 27-25 win.

A variety of mistakes from both teams made for a slow start to the fifth set and a close game. A huge block from Guy allowed for the Dinos to take an elusive two-point lead at 8-6. After switching side, Calgary went on a hitting rampage, easily coming up with their fifth win of the season, and their second win at home by a score of 15-7. Their first was way back in October at their home opener against Mount Royal.

Both teams will go at it again tomorrow night at 5 p.m.
