BOX SCORE EDMONTON - With their second consecutive straight-sets win (25-17, 25-10, 25-12), the University of Alberta Pandas got back to an even record, building momentum with now only three weeks left in the season by defeating the University of Calgary Dinos, Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.
Sophomore outside hitter Karly Janssen led all players with 15 kills and added two aces while rookie setter Mariah Walsh logged a game-high 36 assists.
Freshman middle
Jaylynn Moffatt had a team-high six kills for the Dinos with team captain
Jordhynn Guy earning 13 assists.
The Pandas improve to 8-8 in the standings, good for sixth in the conference standings and two points up on the final playoff spot. Calgary drops to 4-12 on the season but are not out of the playoff hunt with six games left to go.
In their best offensive output on the night, the Calgary Dinos struggled early in the opening set, committing three straight attack errors to help build an Alberta 5-1 lead. Yet the visitors refocused their efforts and decreased their deficit to one but could not find the equalizer before the Pandas put together a 6-2 run to regain their own momentum.
Janssen spun three straight kills for the home team to help Alberta claim the first set and the Pandas continued with confidence in the second set, led by fourth-year middle Dione Lang netting four of Alberta's first five points.
A 10-0 run soon after, itself followed shortly by a 6-0 run and the Dinos were quickly down by two sets, thanks to Lang, Janssen, and sophomore outside hitter Kacey Otto.
The trio combined for nine more kills in the third and final set, Otto ending the game with a pair of kills, the first strike finding center court and the second going off the Calgary block and falling just outside the sideline.
Alberta heads out on the road next weekend for a two-game series against the UBC Okanagan Heat while Calgary returns home to face the Saskatchewan Huskies.
