Jack floor gets a makeover

| By:
CALGARY - After 25 years of hard service, the Jack Simpson Gymnasium floor is getting a make-over this summer.

The Gym and upper-level running track will be closed from April 1 until July 8, which will allow workers to remove, replace and re-finish the hardwood floor. The new floor will also debut the new-look University of Calgary Dinos' logo, an exciting re-fresh of the Dinos brand.

The floor in the Jack, home of the Dinos basketball and volleyball teams, has been in service since the building opened in 1987.

“A typical wood floor will last about 25 years,” explains Keith Toupin, Director of Operations for the Faculty of Kinesiology “The sanding and refinishing process removes a small layer of wood each time, therefore there are only so many times that you can refinish a floor.”

The work is being funded through the Provincial Infrastructure Maintenance Program and will also include replacement of the subfloor. Due to the anticipated high level of dust and strong fumes associated with the project, the upper level running track will also be closed for the duration of the construction.

During the construction the rehabilitation equipment and spin cycle centre will be relocated to other spaces in the facility. Please consult Fitness Centre Staff for details.

The Jack will reopen in July in time for the Dinos basketball and volleyball summer camps.
