CALGARY – The Dinos finished off the regular season with a sweep of the Regina Cougars as they defeated the visitors 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 25-12) on Feb. 9 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
With the win, Calgary will head back to Langley, B.C. to take on the No. 2 Trinity Western Spartans in one of the Canada West women's volleyball quarterfinals to be played next weekend. As for Regina (5-17), they finish their season in tenth play and will miss the playoffs this year.
Courtney Dawson had an outstanding 21.5 points on the night that included a game-high 15 kills and 6.5 blocks. Andrea Price finished off her career at the Jack with 15 points for the Dinos in the win and fifth-year Lindsey Doland also hit double digits in the win with 10.5 points of her own.
For Regina, middle Michelle Sweeting recorded 11.5 points and Tori Glynn was right behind her with another 11.
In the first set of the match, the Dinos took the lead early on and never looked back. Fifth-year Price lead Calgary to the technical timeout with two kills and a big block on the left side to go up 16-8. Their lead grew to as large as ten as the Dinos continued to dominate in the first set. Calgary went on to win it 25-14.
It was a shaky start for Calgary in the second set with a number of errors allowing visiting Regina to take a five point lead. The Dinos began to pick it up after a timeout, and got within one. The Cougars went on another run earning a two point lead at the break. The visitors continued to push on the offence with the Dinos having to scramble on defence. Calgary was unable to overcome the deficit and Regina tied it up with a 25-21 win.
The third set was a whole different story as the Dinos took a commanding 9-1 lead at the beginning of the set. A number of blocks forced the Cougars to change their offence as the Dinos continued to dominate. The home team won the go ahead set 25-19.
Calgary continued to dominate in the fourth set and would close out the final set with a 25-12 win. The Dinos finish the regular season with a .500 record of 11-11, good for seventh place in Canada West.
